Review: Clairol Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo

Hello lovelies! In June of 2012, I ombre-d (basically bleached the ends) of my hair. A little over a month ago, I trimmed my hair almost 4 inches. Now that the lightest part has been cut off, the ends of my hair look pretty brassy/orangey from the bleach. To get rid of this brassiness, you're supposed to use purple shampoo. This method works by depositing small amounts of purple pigment in your hair, canceling out the yellow and orange tones (purple is the opposite of yellow-orange). I picked up Clairol's Shimmer Lights shampoo, and I've been using it for the past month, so I thought it would be helpful for my blonde/ombre-d readers if I did a review.

The product & packaging:

The bottle is relatively small for the price (I got it for 8$ at my local beauty store), but you don't have to use much product so it should last a long time. I use it every time I wash my hair, and it's lasted me a month at least.

The product comes out like shampoo. I like to apply it at the same time as my conditioner because I use other shampoo and only need it on the ends, where my hair is still affected by the bleach. If all of your hair is blonde, you should use it with your shampoo so it covers your whole head. It also smells nice, which is good.

Time:

On the bottle, there's no directions to let it sit, but I've found that leaving the product to sit in your hair for at least a minute or two helps a lot.

Results:

Although my hair isn't completely blonde, I have still seen results with this shampoo. My hair looks a little darker, but there are almost no brassy tones left. If you continue your use of this shampoo, the results will get better and better - beware, if you wash your hair a lot, the results will not be as noticeable because you're literally washing the purple pigment out every time.

Recommended for:

If you have wavy/curly, thick hair that does not have to be washed as much as thin, greasy hair, then this product is for you. I'm sure it can't be as effective as dying your hair a different color or using a toner, but it helps as an easy substitute with no damage.

Overall, I would recommend this product to someone else. It has worked relatively well for me, and I hope it does for you too!

P.S. - if you ever want me to review a product, let me know and I'll try to test it out!

HOLIDAY DRESSES

Hello lovelies! Since the holidays are now in full swing and everyone's rushing to get their party dresses, here's a few of my favorites to help you out.

party dresses

I'm really loving sheer and lace fabrics right now. Interesting cutouts are attention-grabbing, and a perfect way to show off without showing too much. Flippy skirts are definitely a favorite of mine too. Also, bright prints like the red houndstooth are adorable and festive.

Good luck finding the perfect dress!

Cheerleader-inspired Outfit

Hello lovelies! As a Freshman this year in school, I can finally be part of my school's cheerleading team! I was on the team for football season, and now that basketball season is approaching, my life revolves around cheer. I get to find out if I'm on JV or Varsity tomorrow (eeeeek) but I'll probably be on JV cause I'm a freshman. Anyway, I wanted to show you guys an adorable cheer-inspired outfit to wear to school, shopping, hanging out with friends, pretty much anywhere you won't be judged for wearing a cheerleading skirt.

Instagram

Pieces of the vintage-cheer-inspired outfit:

Vintage cheer skirt (you can find them on Ebay or Etsy)
Crop top in a coordinating color
Hair bow (American Apparel has these!)
Creepers
Calf or Knee High socks (also found at American Apparel and pretty much everywhere)

Do you like the idea of dressing up in a vintage cheer skirt, or do you think it's too costumey? I would love to know. Really, I would.

BLACK FRIDAY HAUL

Hello lovelies! I recently posted about some Black Friday deals and strategies to help shoppers out on Black Friday. Using these strategies, I picked up a few items that I love and want to share with you!

The original price of this skirt was $60, marked down to $40, and then since UO was giving 50% off all sale items, the final price was $20. Pretty good, right? I've been wanting a pleated skirt for ages and this was the perfect color. Cannot wait to wear it!

I love this shirt so much! It's super soft and baggy and comfortable and ahhhhh I cannot wait to wear it! This is a Christmas present from my mommy so I can't have it until Christmas. I seriously can't wait. Because Bloomingdales was having a big promotion, I got $25 off this shirt! YAY FOR SALES!!!!

I think Black Friday was successful! Did you go shopping on Black Friday? What did you guys get?

RINGS

Hello lovely readers of this somewhat lovely blog! I've always liked rings, but rarely wore them because I always seem to lose jewelry. I've lost countless rings from taking them off, earrings have fallen out of my ears, and bracelets have been left on desks at school.

Now that I'm a responsible teenager (that was a joke - pretty sure that's an oxymoron) and I no longer lose jewelry as much, I've started to wear rings a lot. Here are the ones that I'm dying for right now:
rings I want

Do you wear a lot of rings? Which are your favorites? Where do you get them? Considering some rings are very cheap and some are crazy expensive, what price range do you usually pay for rings? Let me know!

GREECE

This past weekend, my friend came over to my house to work on a dance for Cheerleading tryouts. She stayed the night, and being teenage girls, we had to watch a chick flick.

After much deliberation, we decided on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It was perfect. My favorite part of the movie? Lena, one of the girls that's part of the Sisterhood, goes to a Greek island called Santorini. I'm dying to visit Greece, especially because I'm from there. Alyssa, roughly translated to Greek, means "without rabies (madness)". I know, it's beautiful.

TODAY I FEEL LIKE GEORGIA NICHOLSON

A lot of things have happened in the past week, and at first, I had trouble dealing with all of them. With the help of my friends, I now know that I'm stronger and stupid people will not get in the way of my happiness. Only positive vibes will come off through me, and everything is going to get better.

I feel like Georgia in the part of Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging where she throws everything in her room out, packs what's left, dies her hair blonde and decides moving to New Zealand is a good idea.

today I feel like georgia nicholson

Now I really want to live on the South Coast of England and have a really cute English boyfriend. ONLY POSITIVE THOUGHTS RIGHT?

OBSESSION: Knee High Socks

Hello lovelies! Since it's finally becoming chilly in Southern California (as in 70 degrees...), I'm finally able to wear a bit of warmer clothing!  Because chunky sweaters and warm pants are still out of the option, knee high socks are the perfect match to my skirts for the transition from summer to fall.

I'm especially loving the pair from Urban Outfitters with the toggles on the sides. They remind me of winter and being in the snow. What's your opinion on knee highs? Too much, or too cute?

VINTAGE CHEERLEADING SKIRTS

Hello lovelies! So for my High School, I'm on the cheer team, and we have the cutest uniforms ever! I've always loved cheerleading uniforms because they're so girly but can give off a tough vibe too. When I met Petra Collins at the Rookie Road Trip event in Los Angeles, she was wearing a vintage red, white, and yellow cheer skirt.

Petra's outfit gave me the inspiration to start hunting for vintage cheerleading skirts. There's about a million on Ebay and a few really cool ones on Etsy

Instead of buying one off the internet, I found my mom's old cheerleading skirts from her High School days.

I threw on my Rookie Mag tshirt to complete my Petra Collins-inspired look. What do you think? Would you wear cheer skirts everyday, or save them for the sidelines? Let me know!

REDECORATING MY ROOM

Hey lovelies! I've decided to make a little post series for redecorating my room. It'll be done sometime in October because my birthday is in October and redecorating my room is my birthday present from my family!

So far I've taken down all of the pictures on my walls... It's so sad, the walls are so empty! I've made a stash of photos and magazine clippings that will eventually turn into a wall collage after my room is repainted.

This is a model of what I want my room to look like:

I also started DIYing some things for my room. The backyard of my house is a hill with a lot of trees/brush, and since there are a lot of fires in California, we have to cut down the dead brush (there's a lot of it) every few years. Because of this, there are a lot of little branches at the top of the hill. I went outside and collected maybe 40 branches, washed them, sanded the outsides, took some of the bark off, and let them dry out (this is their second day of drying in the sun - I even made a foil oven so they'd get completely dry lol). I took 4 branches and hot glued them to a cork board that was previously covered with purple fabric (my current room has a purple/white/light green theme).

I love this DIY because it was unbelievably easy and it really adds to my room's theme of forest/england/cottage/cold place. I really need to think of a word for that.

ROOKIE MAG MEETUP: Meeting Tavi Gevinson

Hey loves! Yesterday I attended a Rookie Mag meetup at Space 15 Twenty in West Hollywood. If you don't know what Rookie is, check out my post about them here. Pretty much, they're an online magazine that publishes photos, stories, playlists, DIY's, and more.

Tavi Gevinson of Style Rookie is the Editor in Chief of the magazine. This summer, Tavi, Petra Collins, and Hazel Cills went on a road trip of the USA, meeting Rookie readers around the country. Their last events are being held in Los Angeles, so I forced my mom to drive me (*insert I-am-a-13-year-old-and-I-can't-drive lecture here*) to one of their meet-ups.

It was so much fun! We shopped around at a thrift sale, fangirled over Petra Collins's photography, sat in a Rookie-fied mini treehouse, took awkward photos, and made new friends. I went alone (my mom was distracted by a nearby Farmer's Market) and met a few nice girls that walked around with me the whole day.

Tavi was the nicest person and really down to earth. We talked about my deprived childhood because I don't like candy and I've never had soda in my life. Then everyone pitched in and bought me a Horchata, which is pretty much a cold, liquid churro. It was awesome.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: new creepers

new creepers from Steve madden! $70 off yess

I got new creepers yesterday! They're from Steve Madden.

My shorts are Levi's and I got them from the Melrose Trading Post for $20.

My jumper is from Wildfox (I don't think they sell it anymore) and my friend got it for me for my birthday last year. It is the most comfortable sweater in the universe.

My bag is just the shopping bag Steve Madden gave me to take home my shoes.

DIY Miu Miu Cat Collar

Okay, I know I'm really late on this one. Two years, to be exact. Anyways, I made my own Miu Miu Inspired cat collar! I used a template for the cat that I found online (I used iron-on paper to get it on the collar) and I sewed the collar using a plain white t-shirt.

miu miu inspired cat collar I made! and an awesome work mat from covent garden!

I also got this super rad mat from Covent Garden that's pretty much a big collage of anything related to London.

DIY Ombre Hair/Aftercare Using Bleach

Hey loves! I recently did my own DIY Ombre hair. I love how it turned out, and it was 10x cheaper than if I were to get it done professionally in a salon.

I used L'Oreal Paris Super Blonde Lightening Creme in the shade 200. Since you're only putting the bleach creme on the bottom section of your hair, you'll only need one box. I didn't even need to use half of the bottle to do my ombre.

Things you will need:

Bleach (you can use drugstore bleach, but I've heard Sally's Beauty has really good bleach too)
Trash bag
Newspaper (to cover up your bleaching area)
A ventilated space
Two hair ties

Tips:

If you have light hair (light brown to blonde) you will not need to leave the bleach in as long.
Bleach does damage hair. If you hair is already dry and damaged, it will damage it more than if your hair is healthy.
If your hair is dark, the bleach may make your hair look orange. Be prepared to have this result.

If your hair turns orange or is really damaged, continue on to the aftercare section of this post for more tips.

Step 1:

Lay out the newspaper all over your workspace so you don't get bleach on anything. I would recommend working in a bathroom with windows or a fan/air conditioner because bleach smells HORRID and your eyes may water. Don't forget to actually open the windows and turn on the fan!

Step 2:

Cut arm/neck holes in a trashbag. Wear it. I've found this is a much easier way to prevent the bleach from getting on your clothes than simply using a towel. Plus, you won't have to adjust the towel if it falls, and you can just throw out the trash bag after.

Step 3:

Mix your bleach. There will be bleach powder and a developer in boxed bleach as well as bleach purchased at beauty stores like Sally's. You will need bleach. You will not achieve a light enough ombre with blonde/light brown hair dye.

Step 4:

Using gloved hands, apply the bleach as far up as you want it to go on your hair. It should be more saturated on the bottoms of your hair, and fade towards the top. You can use your fingers to put bleach on certain strands of hair to help with the blending process.

Step 5:

Wrap the beached hair in tin foil and leave it on for the recommended amount of time. More time means lighter hair, so continually check the bleach to make sure you have the shade you want.

Step 6:

Remove the tin foil and wash out the bleach from your hair.
If you are happy with the results already, shampoo and condition your hair and you're finished! If you want it to be lighter, continue on to step 7.

Step 7:

Apply more bleach to the ends of your hair, not going up higher to where the bleach was previously applied. This will make the bleach more saturated and lighter at the ends of your hair, giving it a gradient/ombre look.

Repeat steps 5 and 6.

You're finished!

------------------------------------------- Aftercare -------------------------------------------

If your hair turns orange/brassy...
You can use toners to get some of the orange/brassiness out of your hair. I recommend L'Oreal's Brass Banisher. I have heard many good reviews on this product, and it's way cheaper than getting it done at a salon.
You can also use toners found at Sally's Beauty, which have also gotten great reviews.
Remember: toners do not take all of the orange out of your hair. A blue or purple based toner will simply help cancel out orange and yellow tones, making your hair less orange/yellow.

If your hair is damaged after bleaching...
You can use hair masks and oils to replenish it. I recommend Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle for a deep conditioner. You can leave it on for more the three minutes, also. It's extremely cheap and works wonders for my hair.
Olive oil can be used as an oil treatment if you want to have more moisture in your hair. Simply rub the oil into your hair and cover it in tin foil so it doesn't drip and get everywhere. Leave the olive oil in for as long as possible, then wash it out with shampoo.
Also, try to limit the use of heat styling products on your hair. I haven't used any heat whatsoever for a month since I've bleached my hair, and it feels so much healthier and less dry.

Good luck! If you have any questions at all, comment and I'll reply for sure.

GRAFITTI PERMITTED

Walking along in London today, I spotted a cool tunnel where graffiti is allowed. I had to take a picture with my new Topshop bag and the cool walls. I'm loving London!

We're leaving for Provence in the South of France tomorrow. I really wish I had more time in London, but Provence will be lovely. Talk to you soon!

LONDON HAUL

My dream has been fulfilled! I've gone to the Oxford Circus Flagship Topshop store, and to Camden Market!

The Topshop store was amazing. As explained in this post, although the Pound is worth more than the American Dollar, Topshop has weird conversions so if you buy it in England, it's actually cheaper than in America. My mom promised me I could go on a mini shopping spree in Topshop because I've had to wear a uniform all my life and my "Upper School" next year allows regular clothes. Woohoo! Here's a few of my favorite pieces I got from Topshop.

I also went to Camden Market! It's amazing there, like a giant Rose Bowl Flea Market with everything imaginable! I also payed a stop to Rokit Vintage Clothing, which was recommended to my by bluesirens on Tumblr. They had the coolest vintage finds, and I had so much fun!

What do you think of this haul? Like the modern stuff from Topshop or the vintage finds from Camden more? Or do you not like it at all? Let me know!
Going to Provence (South of France) tomorrow, lots of beautiful picture opportunities (and French cheese!)
